Admission
Note: For all qualifications, if no proof of one successful year of academic study at a recognized higher education institution is available, the applicant is required to complete the Feststellungsprüfung (Assessment Examination) after attending a Studienkolleg (Preparatory College) in a subject-oriented track relevant to their prior specialization. This applies to nearly all students.
British Columbia or Yukon Territory
Your possibility of admission:
With the British Columbia Certificate of Graduation (with Transcript of Records) or the Secondary School Graduation Diploma (with Senior Secondary School Statement) / Diplôme de Fin d'Études Secondaires, you qualify for general admission to a preparatory course/the assessment examination, if you meet the following conditions.
If the following conditions are not met, you cannot study at a public German university.
- You are required to have successfully passed 13 courses in grade XI and grade XII, thereof at least 5 in grade XII.
- The Senior Secondary School Statement has to include:
- 2 languages, 1 thereof with course number 12
- mathematics and 1 natural science subject, 1 thereof with course number 12
- Your average total grade has to be at least C+.
Ontario
Your possibility of admission:
If the Ontario Secondary School Diploma meets the conditions below:
With your educational background, you qualify for direct general admission. This allows you to apply directly to a German higher education institution for academic studies in any subject area.
If not:
You qualify for general admission to a preparatory course/the assessment examination.
The following conditions apply:
- You are required to have passed at least 12 general-education courses of classes 11 and 12, thereof 6 University Preparation Courses (UPCs) of class 12.
- Additionally, the subject and grade overview has to include:
- 2 languages (English or French on a native speaker level + one foreign language)
- mathematics (“advanced functions” and “calculus and vectors”)
- a natural science subject (Chemistry, Biology, Physics)
- an additional subject corresponding to upper classes of secondary school in Germany
- an average total grade of at least 65 % in the 6 UPCs
Nova Scotia
Your possibility of admission:
If the Nova Scotia Secondary School Diploma meets the conditions below:
You qualify for general admission to a preparatory course/the assessment examination.
If not:
You cannot study at a public German university.
Minimum Requirement
- Proof of Completion: A minimum of 17 courses during Senior High School (grades 10–12).
- Course Requirements in Grade 12: At least 5 distinct general-education subjects, with 4 subjects at "Academic" or "Advanced" level (previously known as "code 4" or "code 5" courses).
Detailed Course and Grade Requirements:
- Languages: 2 languages, with at least 1 language at "Academic" or "Advanced" level (previously "code 4" or "code 5").
- Mathematics and Science: At least one subject in mathematics and one in science, with one of these at "Academic" or "Advanced" level (previously "code 4" or "code 5").
- Minimum Grade: Each individual subject must be passed with a minimum grade of 50 %.
- Overall Average: The overall average must be at least 60 %.
Alberta or Northwest Territories
Your possibility of admission:
With the Alberta / Northwest Territory High School Diploma (accompanied by the High School Transcript of Achievement) you qualify as follows:
- Subject-oriented direct admission to degree programs related to your previous specialization if you can present proof of one successfully completed academic year at a recognized higher-education institution.
- Otherwise: Admission only to a Studienkolleg (preparatory course) followed by the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment examination).
If the minimum requirements below are not met, you cannot study at a public German university.
Minimum Requirements
- A total of at least 100 credits earned across Grades 10, 11 and 12 (Senior High Level).
- Successful completion of 5 independent Grade 12 subjects with course numbers in the
30-39
range. - The Transcript of Achievement must document two full-year courses (5 credits each) in each of the following areas:
- Languages: 2 languages, with at least one bearing a course number ending in
30
. - Mathematics and Science: Mathematics and one natural-science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics), with at least one of these courses numbered
